It is not always recommended to flee the police.

In Florida a person at the beach was suspected by the police to consume drugs and the suspect tried to escape. At the beach there is only one direction to escape – the open waters.

To escape the police, the suspect jumped into the water and swam towards the horizon. However, the suspect did not consider that there are fish in the ocean and many of them are big and hungry. A big fish, a shark, had already chosen the suspect as its next meal and followed him.

To rescue the suspect, the police distracted the shark with speedboats and got the suspect out of the waters. The try to escape the police was really unnecessary because the police always get their guy.

President Trump fulfills the first election promises

Today was the first full day in office and the new President of the United States when to work and signed three executive order which repeals executive orders of the former president Obama.

Each president has the power to use executive orders to solve an issue, however, each order is only valid as long as the successor do not repeal the order or signs a new order. Mr. Trump stop the hiring of federal employees except for military, stop the funding for abortion and retreated from the TPP (Trans-Pacific-Partnership). There may be coming more in the future.

An executive order is a decision that the president signs to get a necessary piece of politics done without going through the legal process. But these executive orders can only solve a small portion of an issue and to solve the process completely a law is necessary. Such a law process takes often a long time because both parts of the legislation – House of Representative and the Senate – have to agree to law before the president can make binding with his signature.

One example is the order that immigrated children that were brought to the United States without going through the immigration process can stay legal in the country but these children cannot apply for citizenship. This order can easily be ended by President Trump.

Trump's Inaugauration

Today is the most important day for the next four years for the Americans even when more than 60 Democrats representative boycotting this event. It has taken place because that is the way democracy works. You may not like the outcome of an election but you have to live with the result and make the best of it.

This day starts when the president-elect left Blair House the official guest house of the president. Mr. Trump stay there as it is tradition and spent the night. At 7.30 am he and his entire family went to the service in the Church of Presidents nearby. Then followed the coffee meeting in the White House with the outgoing president and the first lady.

Shortly before the president-elect President Obama was seen in the oval office for the last time. Maybe that was the moment when he left the personal note for his successor. That is also a tradition and every president left this note not only to wish the next one well but also to give his last thoughts about the job of the president. This job is not that joyful as many may think, often it is a burden that may give the president sleepless nights.

After the coffee meeting both the president and the president-elect drove together in the presidential limousine – the beast – to the Capitol for the swearing in. A quart to twelve the Vice-President took his oath. Exact at noon Mr. Trump spoke his oath of office and became the 45^th President of the United States and gave his inauguration address.

At the following luncheon the president honors his political opponent Mrs. Clinton and her husband with a kind words and a standing ovation. That shows that Mr. Trump fights hard but he also respects his opponents that do not back down.

In the afternoon the new president signed a few executive orders and after heading back to the White House attended the presidential parade of the Military groups, high school bands and veteran organizations. This inauguration day concluded with the attendance at several ball where the president danced with his wife to the Frank Sinatra song “I did it my way”. I think that will be the motto for the next four years and it will certainly be interesting to watch what happens next.

Dr. Martin Luther King Day

On the third Monday in January we celebrate the Martin Luther King Day. This day is in remembrance of the death of the major figure of the Civil Right movement.

Mr. King was a Baptist minister who fought for the civil rights of the Afro-Americans in the 60s with non-violent disobedience and on the base of Christain beliefs. One of the most remembered speeches of Mr. King was “I have a dream” which is tightly knot to his legacy.

His movement grew quickly and one of the icon members of this movement is the Congressman John Lewis who represents a district of Atlanta. During the hot time of the civil rights movement  Mr. Lewis marched side-by-side with Dr. Martin Luther King.

Mr. Lewis articulated his concerns about the legitimacy of President-elect Trump and Mr. Trump tweeted back in his well-known way. This discussion on the internet resulted in the boycott of representatives at the upcoming inauguration of the new president.

In South Florida the motorcyclists and dirt bike riders have their day of disobedience which is called "bike’s up, guns down”. This is already a tradition in Fort Lauderdale, but it is extremely dangerous for the traffic because the bike riders’ behavior is often unpredictable. This year we had a dead person for the first time. I think this behavior is not the right way to protest because there are too many people in danger to get hurt and that is not compatible with the beliefs of Mr. Martin Luther King.

You are fired at the inauguration

Yes, that can happen. In the United States there are several service positions in which a person is chosen and appointed by the president. In this case I am not referring to the members of the government for example the Department of Defense or Department of Justice. These positions are nominated by the president and are interrogated by the Senate. When the Senate agrees with these president’s picks they are confirmed and they can start working in the government.

But there are other positions in lower ranks that are directly appointed by the president and these positions do not need the confirmation by anyone. According to this process these positions are limited in time to the end of the presidency of the president. That means these employees have to write their letter of resignation before the president-elect is sworn in. The president-elect decides whom he wants to keep and who has to leave.

When the president decides to let go such an appointee, this person has to work exactly until the new president comes into office and one minute later he or she is out of job. That sounds hard but every appointee knows that and for them their service is not only a job but an honor and a service for the community. That is a really interesting concept that is little known.

FBI under Investigation

I do not know if you remember the last few days before the election when the FBI launched a new investigation into the email server of Mrs. Clinton. The reason for this investigation was triggered by email that were hacked by the Russians and leaked by WikiLeaks. The intention was to influence the US election by getting again attention to this issue which was already investigated and cleared in August 2016.

When the FBI came out with this investigation we were already in the hot phase of the election and even to the policies of this agency such a handling was not appropriate. But the damage was quickly done and today it does not matter because everyone knows the result of the election.

However, the proceedings are not in line with the regulations and therefore the FBI is now investigated by the Department of Justice. We will see what the finding will be but I think it is the right way to get this process checked out to prevent such a handling in the future. Democracy is too precious as that it should be harmed in such a way.

I like this handling because there are still many democracies in the world that do not have such high standards and their people are disappointed and frustrated. The United States tackle quickly a problem and do not try to sweep it under the rug.

Shooting at the Airport in Fort Lauderdale

Sadly, my home town Fort Lauderdale is today in the breaking news because of a shooting at the international airport. I hoped never to read such news but such an event can never be prevented. There are always people that do not have respect for life. They do not care for anyone and even the strictest gun laws will prevent such events.

The tragic event happened in the arrival area where the travelers pick up their checked baggage. The shooter was based on the existing regulations allowed to transport a weapon in his checked baggage and when he arrived, he picked up his bags and loaded his gun in a bathroom. He shot five people dead and wounded several others who were transported to the hospital for treatment.

However, our Sherriff and his officers as well as the first responders did a great job to help the people and they caught the shooter quickly. As we later learnt the shooter is a mentally disturbed veteran from Alaska who lived in South Florida a few years ago.

Because of this incident the airport was shut down and the service is expected to resume on Saturday when all crime scene investigations are finished.

Nevertheless, the airport in my home town Fort Lauderdale is safe and I am not afraid to go everywhere because I know and trust the authorities and the law enforcement. I will make my next trip also from that airport and I invite you to Fort Lauderdale – the Venice of America – to enjoy our life style.

When stopped - don't not leave your car

We already educate Florida visitors and tourists on our information portal www.florida-informations.com about the important custom and rules when travelling in the United States for years. However, some information needs to be stressed constantly to make sure that it is known and keeps you save.

In many countries it is common to leave your car when you are stopped by the police or the road troopers. Such a behavior can have bad consequences for you as the driver. As long as you stay in your car when stopped on the street or road you are in a save spot. As soon as you leave the car such movements are interpreted by the law enforcement officer as a threat and they are allowed to protect themselves with all necessary force.

Therefore, never leave your car unless the officer tells you to do so. Also do not show any aggressive movements or speech because nearly every officer has either a dash cam or even a body cam that records every move not only for your protection but also for the protection of the officer. Disrespectful behavior is recorded and can be use as evidence later.  

Stay save when travelling in the United States and Florida. The many officers on the roads are there for your safety and are often there to assist you. So be nice to them and respect them.

Bald eagle chick born and healthy

That is a good start for the year 2017 and maybe it is also a sign for good fortune. Just at the brink to a new year we in Florida are lucky. A breeding eagle had a little eagle chick as the breeding camera showed.

One of the breeding and residential grounds is the state of Florida and this particular one was breeding in the Everglades in South Florida. It made us all happy to see this little fluffy bird because a few days ago a mature female eagle died because of her injuries and the trauma when she slid into a storm drain.

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States and you will find pictures on many federal governmental buildings and items like the federal seal or on the rug in the oval office in the White House.

Eagles are also strictly protected and it is illegal to obtain or to possess any part of these birds of prey – not a feather nor a claw. According to the beliefs of the Native Americans the bald eagle is a sacred bird and serves as a messenger between the gods and the humans. Feathers and claws of this majestic bird are used for rituals in the Native American religion. Therefore every feather that you find anywhere or even when you find a dead eagle you have to turn over to the authorities.

A Ticket for Christmas

There is every day something interesting happening in Florida and lots of these things are positive like this one.

During the last few days’ drivers in Miami got a ticket while stopping at street corners with a stop sign. The policemen were luring in the bushes and waited for their prey - the drivers. When the drivers came along and stopped at the street corner to make a right turn, the police officer jumped out of his hiding and caught the driver.

The surprised drivers often did not know what happened and why they were stopped by the police officers. They were sure that they made no driving mistakes. And they were right!!!

This ambush was a very positive one. The officers were Santa Claus in disguise. They rewarded the drivers with a gift card of $25 because the car drivers were on the nice list and did everything correctly.

Yes, they stopped at the stop sign, checked the traffic and let pedestrians pass before they slowly moved into the right turn and continued their way. Such a good driving behavior must be rewarded with the gift card and if you are lucky with your picture in the local news.

America's new President-Elect Trump

Thank God the election is over! The last fifteen months really was a hard time. Every day were new scandals, reports and bad words during the campaign. Every candidate tried to show his or her potential.

At the beginning during the first debates when more than 16 candidates were fighting for the pole position it was sometimes even funny. However, the more the number of the candidates shrunk, the uglier the campaigns got.

I am really proud for the American people for their patience and their faith into their candidates. Both parties fought with all they had and now it is over. Not every country is so passionate in their vote. When I look to my home country the elections are often dull and not exciting. In the United States I was nearly glued to the TV and was curious what were the latest news.

There was a story that a baby had to wait to be born until the parents had cast their votes and then they rushed to the hospital. In Dade and Broward county 80 % of the registered voters had already cast their votes until the afternoon before election day. That demonstrates that the Americans know their rights and take the vote seriously.

Then on election day the TV coverage started at 4 pm in the afternoon and the ballots closed at 7 pm in Florida. At that time the first results from three little towns in Vermont were already in and publicized.

But it was still a long night because of the size of the United States the last election stations closed after 12 am. At 4.30 am at night on November 9 it was official. Mr. Trump is the next president of the United States.

I think his presidency will be an interesting one. Let's see and hope for the best. It will be entertaining for sure.

Hurricane Matthew - October 2016

It is already a long time ago that we had a hurricane that close to our homes in South Florida. We are living here in Florida for nearly ten years now and our first big storm was Fay in 2008. At that time, we did not know what to expect and how to prepare but this time we know what to do.

Already days ahead of the storm we were warned and alerted to get ready and prepare for the storm. We started in getting enough food, water and gas. All the other necessary items like batteries and medication were already in the cabinets. We finished our important trips early and then stayed at home and watched the news.

Slowly the storm was approaching from the south. Matthew passed Jamaica on the east side and then went through the waters between Haiti and Cuba towards the Bahamas. The storm war predicted to move straight to Miami but while rotating over the Bahamas changed his predicted path. He went a little bit further north and made landfall close to Palm Beach.

But we were not out of the woods when the path changed because we still got a lot of wind, rain and coastal flooding. The schools, airports and ports were closed during the storm and in the afternoon before the storm hit everyone was asked to stay at home or use the hurricane shelters. That means at that point that the police and fire fighters would not come for rescue if the winds reached hurricane strength.

All CERT members - I am a CERT member myself - were on alert just in case there was a disaster in our area. Our task in this case is to help our direct neighbors because the fire fighters and police would not be able to assist.

Thank God we were lucky. Matthew spared Fort Lauderdale and we did not have to help.

September 11, 2016 - Fort Lauderdale Run and Walk

 

September 11 – not only an American day of grief. On September 11, 2001 also many foreign business people and employees of the located companies in the Twin Towers died because these two towers were a business center in Manhattan. Many international banks and companies had offices there.

Like every year there was again a memorial event at the ground zero site with all important dignitaries of politics and business. Even when the wounds of that horrible event slowly heal, a scare will stay forever.

These memorial events not only take place in New York but also in Fort Lauderdale. One of these memorial events was the 5 K Walk and Run in the downtown area. Many participants came out early in the morning to see the sun arise and run for a good cause.

The first Jamaican Millionaire lived large

This historical building is located in Kingston at the Hope Road and offers you a glimpse into the British colonial time.

It was built in 1891 for the first black millionaire of Jamaica—Georg Stiebel. He was a child of a black housekeeper and a German-Jewish merchant and made his money with his investment in gold mining in South America. With the gains from his investments, he bought fifty-one acres of land and built his home. This home was only one of his ninety-nine properties on the island.

The estate is today only eleven acres in the heart of Kingston. However, it is one of the important national monuments and a tourist attraction where you can enjoy the tropic life in the shade of the big canopies of trees.

Appleton Rum Plantation - a place to visit on your tour

One of the best-known plantations in Jamaica is the Appleton Estate. This plantation is located on the southern border of the cockpit country in Nassau Valley.

This estate is the oldest sugar plantation and distillery in Jamaica. It produces sugar and rum and has so since 1749. To get a firsthand impression about the sugar cultivation and rum distillery, you can book a bus tour to the estate.

On this tour you will not only see the manufacturing process, you also have the opportunity to taste the different sorts of rum and liquors. You can even try the best rum of the distillery—the fifty-year-old barrel-aged Appleton Estate rum. In case you prefer a sweet liqueur the rum with pineapple taste may be a nice alternative. However, you can try as much as you want, and if you are lucky, you will get a lunch too.

What is the right culture touch in Jamaica?

When you are in Jamaica, please keep in mind that you are a guest in a foreign country and that the Jamaican population has a different cultural background and experience than you do. The best way to make friends and feel comfortable is to observe and adapt your personal behavior during your stay on the island.

Like every other population, the Jamaicans are proud of their country, their accomplishments, and their flag; therefore, show respect to the flag. Do not use the flag in an inappropriate or disrespectful manner, because it is a symbol of the country and the people.

The country motto and the coat of arms also show the pride and the diversity of the Jamaican people.
